Description

NGC 2685 (aka Arp 336 and Helix Galaxy), is one of the most unique galaxies I've ever seen.   It's a small galaxy (50K LY diam) located 42 million LY away.   It's been suggested that this is the most peculiar of the peculiar Arp galaxies.   A very rare "Polar Ring" galaxy that likely was a result of a collision between two galaxies, there are multiple theories on how this configuration came to be.   However it happened, this galaxy is a sight to behold.   This is a pretty sharp crop to get those internal details to come into view.
