Description

SH2-224, a supernova remnant situated in the constellation of Monoceros, spans an area approximately 25 light-years across. The remnant's complex structure, comprising filaments and shock waves, is believed to have formed from the explosive demise of a massive star between 13000 and 24000 years ago. Emitting radiation across various wavelengths, including X-rays and radio waves, SH2-224 serves as a crucial target for astronomers' observations. Its distance from Earth is estimated to be around 14700 light-years.

This nebula is known to be very faint, thus capturing the details of the nebula is particularly challenging. I therefore shooted with 600s subs in Ha and OIII, so to maximize the SNR. During the processing I tried to highlight the very dim regions of the nebula, and at the same time I adjusted the brightest regions to avoid burning them. It has been a very tough exercise, also because to show the dimmest regions, I had to deal with star halos and of course some gradients (which I corrected according to images taken by other astrophotographers with much larger fields). After many trials, I obtained this version, which is the best I could achieve with my setting.
