Description

Another few days worth of break in the clouds gave me an opportunity to target IC 443.  I was pleasantly surprised to see how strong the Ha and SII signal was from my light polluted backyard, and found the framing to be quite fun.  I see the jellyfish "breath" extending from the bulbous head, scattered by unseen cosmic forces.  I really enjoyed the placement of this nebula between the two bright stars at top right and bottom left, even though my filters and camera give them a funny halo.

I had a bit of an odd time tracking on these nights.  At the beginning of each night (3 in total), PHD2 showed very little error in either axis, and made very few corrections.  The subs, however, showed really bad star trailing.  Each time I forced a re-calibration, and that seemed to help.  But then I reviewed the subs, and it still seems that about half show elongated stars.  I noticed, in blink, that it would get worse for short stretches at a time.  Maybe it's "Periodic Error?"  But, I would have thought PHD2 should compensate for that.  I don't normally see this, apart from the occasional sub with poor seeing, or some jitter, so I wonder what made these nights different.

Oh well.  Maybe it's an excuse to start shopping for a new mount.  I think I've gotten a lot out of my third-hand Atlas EQ-G.  I deserve one of those new harmonic mounts, right?

Anyways, please enjoy.
