Description

I imaged the Milky Way from the amazingly dark skies on the Hawaiian islands of Kauai and the Big Island at the end of July and beginning of August.

This is the third in a series of images from the Big Island where we stayed along the Kohala Coast on the northwestern part of the island looking out over the Pacific Ocean. This image of the Milky Way's core region in Sagittarius was generated from a stack of 65 subs processed in PixInsight.

Imaged using a Nikon D5300 (full spectrum modified), IDAS HEUIB-II (H-α Enhanced UV IR Blocking) filter, and 14 mm Rokinon lens at F2.8. Exposure was 25 seconds at ISO-6400.

Pre-processed using PixInsight Batch Pre-Processing (BPP) script. Images calibrated using darks, bias, and flats. Stacked 65 subs for a total integration time of ~30 minutes. Post-processed in Pixinsight: Cropped, gradient removal with ABE, MLT for noise reduction, Background Neutralization, Color Calibration, SCNR, stretched using Histogram Transformation Tool, Curves Transformation, HDR transform, Local histogram transform, and Color Saturation boost.
