Description

NGC5170 is a fine egded-on-galaxy (typed SA(s)c) at about 60.000 light-years distance from earth in the constellation of Virgo.Its yellowish core area is caused by old stars,while the younger ones in the outer arms are shining much bluer.Very prominent is the dark lane,contrasting quite a lot to the bright core region.With an appearent size of 10.0´x 1.5´arc-minutes and a brightness of about 11 mag. NGC5170 is an easy telescope-object.NGC5170 was detected in 1785 by William Herschel.
