Description

“NGC 4945 (also known as Caldwell 83) is a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation of Centaurus, visible near the star Xi1 Centauri, Apparent Magnitude +4.83. The galaxy was discovered by James Dunlop in 1826 and is thought to be similar to the Milky Way Galaxy, although X-ray observations show that NGC 4945 has an unusual energetic Seyfert 2 nucleus that might house a supermassive black hole. Around the nucleus of the galaxy, there is a dense disk of dust and gas, along with many dense star clusters. This object has an estimated mass of 1.4 ×10^11 M☉. Two supernovae have been observed in NGC 4945: SN 2005af (Type II, mag. 12.8), and SN 2011ja (type IIP, mag. 14)”, "Its distance is estimated at 11.7 Mly (3.6  Mpc) and has an apparent diameter of 20.0′ × 3.8′. Its apparent magnitude is 9.3."…. Wikipedia (abridged)
I love this beautiful, not quite edge on galaxy, with its intricate but pronounced dust lanes. The Ha signal is quite strong and I have reflected that in this rendition.
The star mentioned in the Wikipedia information above,  Xi1 Centaurus is very bright, but there was another just outside of the FOV at upper right which is even brighter. This produced bright rays on the image that I had to deal with. I believe this is Gamma Centauri otherwise known as Muhlifain, Apparent Magnitude +2.17. Although Xi1 Centauri in the FOV is not as bright, it still caused problems with an annular primary mirror reflection that again had to be removed.
As I did an amount of remote imaging from Japan, I was loath to change objects, so I gathered a lot of data on this one (24.7 hrs LRGB & 8.5 hrs Ha). Aside from the reflections the extra SNR made the processing much easier.
