Description

Do flowers grow in space? While they may not, the Rosette Nebula is a beautiful cosmic flower blooming in the constellation of Monoceros. This spectacular nebula is located in our Milky Way galaxy, approximately 5,000 light years away from Earth. The nebula has a diameter of about 130 light years, making it one of the largest emission nebulae in the sky. It gets its name from its resemblance to a four-petal rose flower in full bloom, due to the presence of four luminous stars in its center. This star-forming region is filled with ionized hydrogen atoms that give off a characteristic red glow, making it an amazing target for amateur and professional astronomers. The Rosette Nebula is an area of active star formation, with many young stars and stellar clusters being born in its midst. Its bright colors are the result of glowing hydrogen and oxygen gases, along with a dust of cosmic particles. This process of star formation and destruction has been taking place over millions of years, making the Rosette Nebula one of the most beautiful sights in the night sky. Imaged by me from the city (Rishon Le-Tzion, Israel, Bortle 9) during 7 nights in January 2021, but processed only now in 2023.
