Description

Embedded in a swath of Milky Way stars and dust within the summertime constellation Vulpecula, the Loch Ness Nebula is a collection of dark nebula that collectively resemble the mythical monster. Several members of Lynds catalog of dark nebulae are visible, including (from  right to left in this orientation) LDN 773 (head),  774 (neck), 772 and 769 (chest), and 768 (tail).  However, more than one casual observer has commented that it looks more like a dragon with the head on the left chasing the orange star HD 183681.  Also embedded within the body of the beast are the two faint bluish reflection nebulae, LBN 133 and 134. Finally, the bottom of the frame reveals most of the open cluster NGC 6793.
