Description

This pair of galaxies is located in the constellation of Crater at a declination of -23 degrees.  As you might have guessed by the generally undisturbed nature of these galaxies, they are at different distances from us.

NGC 3511 is the larger galaxy at upper right.  It is 40 million light years away and spans 5 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 60,000 light years.  We are looking at the disk about 20 degrees from edge-on.  This galaxy looks almost identical to my recently posted image of NGC 4096, with an offset core, fragmented arms, several blue star clouds, and no core bulge.

NGC 3513, to the lower left, is a barred spiral located 55 million light years away. It is 3 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 45,000 light years.   Our view of the disk is about halfway between edge-on and face-on.  The galaxy has a bit of a TIE Fighter look, with VV rows seen in the arms.  Star clouds are seen in the outer reaches.
