Description

NGC 7822 is found in the northern constellation Cepheus, who in ancient Greek mythology was King of Aethiopia, married to Cassiopeia and was the father of Andromeda. The star forming region seen here is about 3,000 light-years away and contains many young, hot stars and cosmic clouds of gas and dust. The colors you see are light that has been filtered through narrow bandpass filters, passing the emitted light of elemental gasses like oxygen, hydrogen, and sulfur in blue, green, and red in the classic combination known as the "Hubble palette." These bright emissions are made by energetic bright stars. Their powerful winds and radiation sculpt and erode the denser pillar shapes and clear out a characteristic cavity light-years across the center of this cosmic nursery. Stars could still be forming inside the pillars by gravitational collapse but as the pillars are eroded away, any forming stars will ultimately be cut off from their reservoir of star stuff.
