Description

NGC 2516 is an open star cluster  that can be seen in the southern sky, in the constellation Carina, approximately 1300 light years away from us. Discovered in the middle of the 18th century by the French astronomer Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille, NGC 2516 is also known as the Southern Beehive or the Sprinter. According to specialists, this star cluster is relatively new, its age being "only" 115-135 million years, and it stretches over a distance of 30-40 light years, and with a halo of starts spanning at least 1000 light years.
