Description

The Double Cluster, NGC869 and NGC884, is in the constellation Perseus at a distance of 7500 light years. In total, there are about 20,000 equivalent solar masses in these clusters.The clusters are relatively young, about 12.8 million years old, compared to the Pleiades, which is estimated at 75-150 million years old. Each cluster contains more 300 blue-white supergiant stars. The clusters are headed our way at a speed of about 24 miles/second.

This image was taken at the Cascade Mountain Observatory (aka, my backyard) the night and early morning of January 2 and 3, 2014. using my WilliamOptics FLT110 refractor telescope. The camera was a Nikon D5100 digital SLR. This image is composed of 6 separate exposures ranging from 60 seconds to 5 minutes. The image was composited in MaximDL.
