Description

With Jupiter and Saturn still nicely available (despite a low altitude in my skies) I had to try imaging them even though smoke from the wildfires out west really clobbered the sky transparency (Bortle 7 or so).  This, of course, was combined with the poor seeing we battle here in Denver.  On the 8th, when I imaged Jupiter, the seeing was between 2 and 3 and on the 9th, when I imaged Saturn, it improved to 3, which made the image of Saturn sharper.  I processed Jupiter as best I could and knew that the result could not stand much enlargement, so I decided to make a combined portrait from the two evenings.  The setup for the images was exactly the same ( FL = 2800 mm) so the relative sizes of the planets in the combo image is accurate.  Plus I used WinJUPOS to orient the planets to be aligned properly with celestial north. which is up.  The Saturn image was a stack of about 1800 lucky capture images drawn from 20 videos at about 30 fps and with a length of 25 s.  The Jupiter image was a stack of 700 lucky capture images (the seeing was worse so fewer images were suitable) drawn from 22 videos at about 60 fps and a length of 25 s.; the images were de-rotated using WinJUPOS. Both planets are still  fairly close to opposition, so the comparison seen here is reasonably close to what it would be if the planets were both at opposition.  According to Stellarium, Saturn, including its rings, was slightly smaller than Jupiter in apparent size:  Saturn = 42.3 arc sec and Jupiter = 48.4 arcsec.
