Description

This is a late night moonless pano of a local Dark Site SE of Phoenix. The springtime 2AM sky is still lit, if not dominated, by the light domes of the local SW Desert Cities. The brightest glow is the Pheonix megalopolis (or actually mostly just the SE suburbs as the city center is a good 65 miles away), even though most ballparks and some car lots and shopping centers have turned out their lights for the night. To the left of Phoenix's dome is the glow of Florence and Casa Grande. To the right, illuminating the saguaros is nearby litle Superior AZ, and to the right of the peak is the glow of far-away Tucson (which does have Dark Sky laws to help protect the regional Astronomically-based economic drivers of observatories such as Kitt Peak).

Still present, and dominating the SE sky is the springtime Milkyway.

The red-glow of the sky is partly due to the ever-present suspended desert dust reflecting the light pollution. And partly the effect of the 30sec high ISO exposures which make up the pano images.
