vdB 142 è una piccola nebulosa oscura, visibile nella costellazione di Cefeo.
Si individua verso l'area centrale del grande complesso nebuloso noto come IC 1396, pochi primi d'arco ad ovest dell'ammasso aperto associato alla nebulosa; nonostante le sue ridotte dimensioni, si evidenzia con una discreta facilità, a causa della sua profonda oscurità e per la sua forma, che le ha conferito il soprannome di Proboscide di Elefante. Trovandosi a declinazioni molto settentrionali, si presenta circumpolare dalla gran parte dell'emisfero boreale; tutt'attorno appare circondata da un campo stellare relativamente ricco, e la presenza della nebulosità diffusa di IC 1396 ne risalta ulteriormente la sua natura di nebulosa oscura. La scia scura è interrotta da due stelle di ottava magnitudine.

vdB 142 is a small dark nebula, visible in the constellation of Cepheus.
It is located towards the central area of the great nebula complex known as IC 1396, a few arc minutes west of the open cluster associated with the nebula; in spite of its small size, it stands out quite easily, due to its deep darkness and its shape, which gave it the nickname of Elephant's Proboscis. Being in very northern declinations, it is circumpolar from most of the northern hemisphere; all around it appears surrounded by a relatively rich star field, and the presence of the diffuse nebulosity of IC 1396 further highlights its nature as a dark nebula. The dark trail is interrupted by two eighth magnitude stars.
