Description

Gum 11 and NGC 2579

Cesar the Ape ?

When I first imaged this region, about 6 years ago, with an Achromatic telescope and a Canon DSLR camera, my images only showed the small HII nebulosity area (NGC 2579) with no signs of GUM 11 in those images, then about 2 years ago I had another opportunity to image this area with better equipment and with an Ha filter. I was amazed to see some faint nebulosity in my images and after some basic stacking I saw the 'Ape' and my jaw dropped...😂, what a Pareidolia (Seeing things that aren't there) I thought to myself...

I still couldn't complete my work then due to the pandemic restrictions, bad weather, no access to dark skies etc. I had to wait for another opportunity which finally came along recently.

So excuse my long story and the exaggerated title, my imagination went wild with this image...to me, Gum 11 at the center bottom really looks like the head of Caesar, the ape from the 'Rise of the planet of the Apes' movie.

now to real stuff...

There is very little information about this region, in fact I only found one source with very little details on Galaxy Map, same goes with images, there are very few images of these two objects, this makes me think that perhaps this work of mine would be a humble contribution to science😊

A few notable details to mention;

- The 3 bright stars (from bottom left upwards: q Pup, HIP40826, HIP40943) all
  having small reflection around them (appears only in the Blue filter frames)

- Gum 11 is an HII region ionized by three stars in its center

- NGC 2579 and Gum 11 are also cataloged as RCW 20

- Comparing to our sun the star HIP 40826 is a white giant star, has 5 times the radius of

our sun and about 100 times more luminous.

- Notice the violet rings halos around the large bright stars, they look lovely to me

REV B:

- Improved noise reduction and background
