Description

Messier 74 is a face-on spiral galaxy in the constellation Pisces. It is at a distance of about 32 million light-years away from Earth. The galaxy contains two clearly defined spiral arms and is therefore used as an archetypal example of a grand design spiral galaxy. It is estimated that M74 is home to about 100 billion stars. On this picture you can also see supernova SN2013ej, which was discovered on July 24th, 2013. Supernova 2013ej held at its peak magnitude of 12.5 for the first half of August even as it gradually reddened. As of September 5th it had faded to visual magnitude 13.2 and had reddened much further.
