Description

Messier 82 (also known as NGC 3034, Cigar Galaxy) is the prototype nearby starburst galaxy about 12 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major. The starburst galaxy is five times more luminous than the whole Milky Way and one hundred times more luminous than our galaxy's center. The starburst activity is thought to be triggered by interaction with neighboring galaxy M81 (not shown).
M82 is being physically affected by its larger neighbor, the spiral M81. Tidal forces caused by gravity have deformed M82, a process that started about 100 million years ago. This interaction has caused star formation to increase tenfold compared to "normal" galaxies.  [Ref:  Wikipedia  ]

Capture Information:
The image was captured with the iOptron CEM120 mount, the venerable Meade 12"LX200 SCT OTA, and my QHYCCD QHY294m Pro mono CMOS camera at F7.16 (2182mm FL).
Astronomik's Ha narrow band, and Red, Green and Blue broad band filters were used.

Image Information -- 2023
Ha :    212 subs (17.67hr) on Jan 26th and 27th, Feb 5th, 9th and 11th.
RED :  20 subs (1.67hr) on Jan 26th.
GRN :  20 subs (1.67hr) on Jan 26th.
BLU :   20 subs (1.67hr) on Jan 26th.

All exposures were at 5 minutes (300s) each, 1600 gain, 56 offset, 1x1 bin and -10C.

Processing was done with PixInsight, following (for the most part) kayronjm's tutorial of Feb. 24th from several years back.
Ha filter was used for the Lum image. R, G and B were collected for the color mix.
The detail and color came out nicely.
The background was left with a bit of chromatic noise in an effort to bring out the most detail of the galaxy.

North is to the right (pretty sure), and this is a slight crop due to the misalignment accumulation from the different filters and times.

Comments:
This is the 3rd time I’ve run at this target.
The first was in 2014 with my Meade 12”LX200 fork mount, using the Atik 383L+mono CCD camera.
The second was in 2018 with my de-forked Meade 12”LX200 OTA mounted to my Celestron CGE Pro mount, using the Atik 383L+mono CCD camera.
This time we’re on the iOptron CEM120 mount, using the QHY294 pro mono cmos camera.

It does appear that iOptron has abandoned me and my mount regarding the unacceptable RA excursion issue.  However for now, at least close to the pole, the mount is performing well.
We’ll see what happens as we move towards the south for further targets.
