Galaxy Cluster Abell 1185 and Arp 105

A nearby rich galaxy cluster Abell 1185 and one of the most remarkable examples of ongoing galaxy mergers, Arp 105 (NGC3561/NGC 3561A) residing in this cluster. Arp 105 has been formed as a result of a violent encounter between a spiral galaxy NGC 3561A and a larger elliptical NGC 3561B. A prominent bluish tail emanating from NGC 3561A is a stream of stars, gas and star clusters ejected as a result of the encounter. Assuming the distance of Abell 1185 to be around 400 million light years, the tidal tail in Arp 105 is estimated to be over 100 kpc long. The interacting pair is seen being surrounded by tidal streams and tidal dwarf galaxies, with famous Ambartsumian's Knot (VV237b) among them (bluish knot seen on the opposite side of the elliptical with respect to NGC 3561A).

This LRGB image was created using the data obtained with my mobile setup, the 250mm f/4 Lacerta PhotoNewton and ASI294MM Pro camera riding on the Orion HDX-110 EQ-G mount. The luminance image is a combination of a series of 300s exposures taken at camera gain 0 and 90s exposures taken at gain 108. The RGB color data is comprised of 300s exposures taken at gain 108.
