Description

Up until now I had always used a ZWO ASI120MM and separate color filters for planets, but I wanted to try out a color camera for easier animations and derotation now that the planets were finally starting to rise higher in the sky again. So I ordered a ZWO ASI462MC color camera: it uses one of the newer generation Sony IMX492 sensors with very low read noise and excellent sensitivity in the near-Infrared spectrum.

Finding focus took a lot of trial and error. I had to find the correct combination of extension tubes, adapters, accessories and primary mirror position. Luckily, the Moon was up and that made everything so much easier. The camera train was: 30 mm 2" extension tube > 2" to 1.25" adapter > 3X barlow > L-2 filter > nosepiece > ASI462MC

I was very happy to see some surface detail on Ganymede! Probably over-sharpened the stack a little bit in all my excitement, as this image is just a simple 30 second video. My gain and exposure time would technically allow for more than 200 FPS, but my ROI was set too large for the USB2 connection. So left about 20 of those 30 seconds unused. Definitely something I could work on next time.

30 second capture 688x632 @ 80 fps
