Description

A recapture of 50 hours of narrowband on Bode's and Cigar since December 2022 blended with some wideband from 2021.

The Cigar Galaxy, M82,  is observed edge-on, producing its 'cigar' shape. It is a starburst galaxy, having an unusually high rate of star formation, possibly influenced by its neighbour, Bode's Galaxy, M81.  Radiation from the young stars compresses clouds of dust and gases, initiating further star formation.  Supernovae in the core area occur at a rate of around 1 every 10 years. This intense activity fuels massive bi-polar fountains of ionised hydrogen gas and dust to be emitted into space, seen here in red.

Bode's Galaxy, M81, is seen face-on. It is a grand-design spiral galaxy about 12 million light years away.  The bright red areas of hydrogen emissions in the spiral arms surround areas of star formation, which ionise the surrounding gas.
