Description

This image of comet Neowise was acquired in a beautiful location in Washington which requires a 4x4 to get to. This was taken using a standard (non modified) Canon 80d and a 35mm Rokinon Lens. I took about 120 30 second exposures but most of them suffered from severe light pollution as the comet dropped into the sky glow coming from Ellensburg closer to the horizon so I was only able to use 40 of these images taken the earliest after dark.

This was processed in Pixinsight and was the first time that I used the Comet processing work flow so processing took quite some time. The high level process is first align all images to the comet, using aggressive pixel rejection settings this stack removes the stars so it is a comet only image. Next we subtract the comet from the comet aligned lights to produce (more or less) star only images. These then are aligned to the stars and stacked using similar settings. I had to play around with the settings a lot to get a star only images which did not look terrible. After this I blended the comet image and the star image using pixel math.
