Description

IC 342 is a spiral galaxy located in the constellation Giraffe approximately 8.9 million light years from Earth. It was discovered on August 19, 1892 by William Denning.

The galaxy IC 342 is only 10° from the plane of the Milky Way's disk. This location of this galaxy makes its light strongly obscured by stars, gas and dust clouds belonging to our Galaxy. Were it not for this, due to its relatively short distance, this galaxy would be one of the brightest galaxies in our sky.
