Description

The Horsehead Nebula, also known as Barnard 33, is a dark cloud located in the constellation Orion. It was discovered by Edward Barnard in 1899 and given the number 33 in his famous catalog of dark nebulae. It got its name from its shape, as it resembles a horse's head. It is one of the most spectacular dark clouds in the constellation Orion. The Horsehead Nebula is located near Alnitak (Dzéta Orionis – the far left of the three stars in the Orion belt) and is visible in front of the luminous gas nebula IC 434. IC 434, on the other hand, draws its power from the bright star Sigma Orionis. Stars are still being born in the nebula.
Also visible in the image is the Flame Nebula, also known as NGC 2024, another fascinating star-forming region in the constellation Orion. This emission nebula is emitted by ionized hydrogen and is obscured from Earth by a Y-shaped band of dust that divides it into three parts. Thanks to this, the Flame Nebula forms a magically spherical shape, which is characterized by a spectacular pattern and banded location. Dust clouds can also be found on the periphery of the nebula, so it does not shine against the background of the usual "black sky".
