Description

This spiral galaxy is located 40 million light years away in the constellation of Ursa Major at a declination of +47 degrees.  It spans 7 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 80,000 light years. The disk appears to us at about 12 degrees from edge-on.

The galaxy disk structure is fascinating.  Although looking undisturbed, the core is offset significantly to the right.  Numerous arms are seen – I count at least 4 – but they all appear fragmented and become diffuse in the outer disk.  Several blue star clouds are seen in the outer disk.  No core bulge is seen.
