Description

In the constellation of Gemini, in an environment rich in HIII regions, young stars and ancient remains of supernova explosions, lies the Medusa Nebula (Jellyfish).
It is most likely the remnant of a supernova explosion (which occurred 30,000/35,000 years ago) and is made up of two shells. The event most likely also led to the formation of a neutron star. The area is much studied due to the interaction between the clouds caused by the explosion and the molecular clouds that surround it.
The remains are very large, with an angular diameter of 50 arcmin (the full Moon has a diameter of 30 arcmin) and given its distance from the Earth (equal to 5,000 light years) it has a real size of around 70 light years.
