Description

The Giant Squid Nebula cataloged as Ou4, and Sh2-129 also known as the Flying Bat Nebula, are captured here with just over 20hrs of imaging. Quite chuffed as the squid is one of the hardest nebulas to capture well being incredibly dim. The average imaging time is around 60hrs so I’m happy to get this with only 20. Estimated to be 2,300 light-years away the blue squid has been formed by the outflow of matter from a triple system of hot, massive stars seen near the center of the nebula. The truly giant Squid Nebula is nearly 50 light-years long. Taken with WO71GT reduced to 336mm focal length and and ASI294MC fitted with a optalong extreame dual band (Ha and OIII) filter to pick out the red and blue gases.
