Description

NGC 3556 (M 108) is nicknamed the Surfboard Galaxy. It is a barred spiral galaxy about 45 million light-years away from Earth with a diameter of 110,000 light-years.  It has a mass of 125 billion times the mass of the sun and contains about 400 billion stars.  Approximately 290 globular clusters orbit the galaxy.  The galaxy is inclined 75 degrees to our line of sight.  M108 is receding from us at 435 miles per second.
