Description

English

The Helix Nebula, also known as NGC 7293, is a large planetary nebula located in the constellation Aquarius. It is one of the closest and most well-known planetary nebulae in the night sky.

The Helix Nebula is the remnant of a dying star, specifically a Sun-like star that has exhausted its nuclear fuel and shed its outer layers in the form of a vast shell of gas and dust. This shell of expelled material forms the distinctive shape of a helix or spiral, giving the nebula its name.

As the central star shed its outer layers, it revealed a hot, dense core known as a white dwarf. The intense ultraviolet radiation from this white dwarf causes the surrounding gas to glow, creating the beautiful and colorful structure of the nebula that we observe.

The Helix Nebula is located at a distance of about 700 light-years from Earth and spans a diameter of approximately 2.5 light-years. It is one of the closest planetary nebulae to our solar system and covers an area of the sky about half the size of the full moon.
