Description

NGC 7814 in the constellation Pegasus is located about 40 million light-years away. Nicknamed the Little Sombrero Galaxy for its obvious resemblance to M104, the Little Sombrero is actually about the same size--60,000 light-years across--as the big Sombrero, appearing smaller only because it is more distant. NGC 7814 is oriented almost completely edge-on from our perspective, but dips toward us just enough to make visible the posterior portion of the dark dust lane that bisects the galaxy's disk. As a result, images of this galaxy have a nice three-dimensional feel to them.

The Little Sombrero is rather infrequently imaged. A search on Astrobin yielded only 146 images. I almost did not image it myself, since galaxies of its size provide a poor fit for my scope/camera combination. However, I was charmed by the images of the Little Sombrero that I examined and decided to give it a go to see whether I could produce something presentable.
