Galáxia Centaurus A

Aqui está uma das mais belas e fascinantes galáxias do universo observável. Com seus braços espirais e sua região central brilhante, ela é uma das galáxias mais estudadas pelos astrônomos.

Localizada a cerca de 12 milhões de anos-luz da Terra, a Centaurus A é uma galáxia peculiar, que contém um buraco negro supermassivo em seu centro. Esse buraco negro é tão poderoso que emite jatos de partículas que podem ser observados por telescópios da Terra.

Here's one of the most beautiful and fascinating galaxies in the observable universe. With its spiral arms and bright central region, it's one of the galaxies most thoroughly studied by astronomers.

Located approximately 12 million light-years from Earth, Centaurus A is a peculiar galaxy that houses a supermassive black hole at its core. This black hole is so powerful that it emits jets of particles observable through Earth-based telescopes.

Moreover, Centaurus A is one of the few galaxies that harbors dark dust clouds, which obscure starlight and form intriguing silhouettes. These dust clouds are so dense that if we could see them with our naked eyes, the night sky would appear much darker than it is.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
