Description

Captured in the Atacama desert in Chile. This is a multi frame panoramic using a modified Canon 6d with a 14mm Sigma Art lens at f/1.8, ISO 6400. Each single frame was only 25 seconds long. No stacking or blending, just stitched in Lightroom. I could not visually see the red and green air glow but the camera showed it was there. This colourful glowing of the atmosphere is caused by the heat from the sun making the oxygen and nitrogen molecules fluoresce at high altitudes and this seems to be a common occurrence in the southern hemisphere. Also in the photo, the stream of light glowing above the left side of the structure up to the Milky Way is the Zodiacal light and is caused by diffuse sunlight scattering off dust particles that resides throughout our solar system. It is most visible in the spring, and it was Chile's spring (fall in the north) at the time of taking the photo. So cool to capture all these elements together.
