Description

Here's an Arp galaxy interacting pair. It's Arp 104 and is classified as

'elliptical connected to spiral'. You can see the bridge of material connecting

the 2 galaxies in my image. I don't know if it's unusual to see an elliptical

interacting with a spiral galaxy but I think this is a splendid example. It

would be great to 'pop back' in a few million years to see what's happened to

the 2 galaxies!. Arp called this pair Keenan's System.

This image consists of 10 x 4 mins, 5 x 5 mins and 5 x 6 mins. I did a sigma

combine on each batch then balanced the backgrounds and average merged the

resulting images. A total of 95 minutes exposure. I had a lot of trouble

processing this one, I don't think the seeing was great and it never gets truly

dark this time of year, plus it's pretty faint.

The spiral is ngc 5218 and is mag. 12.3, 2.9' x 1.6' and SBb? pec.

The elliptical is ngc 5216 and is mag. 13.6, 2.4' x 1.8' and E0 pec.
