Description

Here's one I took a while back and just got around to processing into something reasonable. It's an odd one, ngc 5613 through to ngc 5615, again from Arp's catalogue of peculiar galaxies. Arp 178 in Bootes is catagorised as having 'narrow counter-tails', - not really sure what that means. ngc 5613 is the small spiral galaxy, actually a 'ring' galaxy, at the 7-o-clock position relative to the central galaxy, ngc 5614, which is a SAab pec spiral. ngc 5615 is the tiny galaxy at the 8-o-clock position to 5614. It is listed as mag. 17.8 and 0.1' size. 5613 is mag 15.5, 5614 mag 12.5. Notice the tiny chain of galaxies about 4' from 5614 in the 4-0-clock position. They are not identifyable on my charts. There are many other faint galaxies spread across this image.

The interesting thing about Arp 178 is that each of the 3 galaxies mentioned has a different redshift; the point is are they connected? Arp clearly thought so and his atlas image does appear to show a connection.

It was examples such as this that led Arp to suggest that redshift/distance relationships should be re-evaluated.

My image was taken in May using 30 x 120 second exposures through my 10" f4.8 reflector.
