Description

Taken late August 2011, I managed only 7 x 120 sec good exposures before clouds stopped the session. Sigma combined in AstroArt3 and processed in AA3 and PixInsight yielded the final product.

NGC 6946 is an Arp galaxy, a pleasantly bright one too. It is a mag. 9 type Sc galaxy at around 10MLy distance. NGC 6946 actually lies close to the galactic plane and is therefore somewhat obscured by galactic dust. NGC 6946 is very active in star formation and is a prolific producer of supernovae. In fact the super luminous supernova remnant, top left, outer spiral arm is a possible black hole x-ray binary.

Not at all bad for 14 mins exposure, I must go back and do it again soon.
