Description

Here's a rather interesting and not that well known edge-on spiral in Leo Minor. NGC 3432 or Arp 206 was catalogued by Halton Arp as a galaxy with "material ejected from the nuclei."

The disruption is presumably caused by interaction with UGC 5983, the dwarf galaxy to the southwest of NGC 3432. Redshift data gives a distance of 12 +/- 0.9 Mpc for the main galaxy and 14 +/- 1 Mpc for the interacting galaxy. This was probably what attracted Dr Arp to this one as 1-2 Mpc is a little large seperation for a close interaction. I couldn't find out too much about this one, though this is an interesting reference:

The Ionized Gas and Radio Halo of NGC 3432 (ARP 206) by Jayanne English and Judith A. Irwin published in the Astronomical Journal v.113, p. 2006-2024 (1997).

They suggest that an interaction between the two galaxies is responsible for the extra planar features in NGC 3432 as well as an extended radio continuum halo. They have nothing to say regarding the distance between the interacting components.

Magnitude 11.3; surface brightness 13.6 (in magnitude per square arcminute); size 7' x 1.5'.

Exposure 40 x 120 secs. 10" Newt / SXH9C. Guided - no filtration.
