Description

A couple of degrees from the 2 very well known face-on spirals M51 and M101, lies this little almost face-on, totally unknown barred spiral galaxy.

Not as spectacular as either of it's 2 near neighbours, ngc 5377 is, however, not without some interest.

It is a bright magnitude 11.2 galaxy but it has a surface brightness of only 13.7 magnitude per square arcmin, so it is not immediately apparent through the eyepiece.

Its apparent size is 4.6' x 2.7' and it is classified as SBa. It is almost 90 MLy distant from us, so it is rather large.

To me, it's very simple spiral structure gives it the appearance of a 'ring' galaxy and one theory of ring formation is that the ring is formed by the 'bar' sweeping the galactic material into a ring.

It almost looks like a lenticular galaxy with a ring around it - it would be much more impressive from a nearer perspective.

This image, taken on the night of the longest day, is the sum of 30 x 2min exposures, 10 x 3min exposures and 5 x 4min exposures - the 'ring' is that faint.

10" f4.8 Newtonian, H9C ccd camera, guided with my little KWIQ guider and PHD software.
