Description

Here's one that is right out of my comfort zone - I found it really tricky.

Abell 39 is an exceptionally faint planetary nebula with a smooth inner disk and

traces of ring structure and, apparently with no known outer shell.

Its approximate mean surface brightness is 15.0 (in magnitude per square

arcminute). It's magnitude is 12.9, though I have to say it looks a lot fainter

to me and it's brightest star is 15.7. In fact, I didn't believe it was in the frame when

I made the first exposures, only by extensive stretching of 3 minute subs could

I see anything at all!
