Description

This was a completely spur-of-the-moment imaging session. With the moon at nearly 100% illumination, I hadn't planned on imaging at all. However, it was clear, it was a Saturday night, and I figured why not?

At first I thought I would image a globular or open cluster, but none were really calling me. Then I thought, well, let me get some more data on the North America and Pelican. That didn't really strike me as something I wanted to do, so I kept looking around the area. I saw the Lion and figured that would be a good target to try. I framed it up and liked how it looked, so I setup the sequence. I had planned to get a good 6 hours in - hey, it was Saturday night and I didn't have to do anything Sunday. I also wanted to see just how "bad" the image would turn out using the ASI294MM Pro in its "default" mode. With my setup, that gives me just about 2.5"/px scale. Yes, it's under-sampled, and yes, if you zoom in you'll see it.

Unfortunately, after 2.5 hours, the clouds rolled in and killed my session. I decided to stack it anyway and was pleasantly surprised with the results. The result is presented here.

Title: Reprocess of 2021 Data

Description: Last year I uploaded this image after only a single night of data collection. I got out a few more nights last year, but then never actually processed the data. This edit is done from 9.25 hours of SHO data. It's been 2x drizzled. I really still need a whole lot more time on target, but alas, it's too late in the season this year, so will have to wait until 2023. Maybe I'll point my 8" EdgeHD at the Lion's head.
