Description

This image captures a series of objects located in the constellation of Orion at a declination of +12 degrees.

The red emission nebula is the northernmost extent of Sh2-264. This nebula, nicknamed "Orion's Head" for its location at the top of the Orion constellation, is over 3 degrees in diameter. It also has the nickname of the “Angelfish Nebula”.  The image shows the top half of the angelfish.

The blue-purple reflection nebula at the center of the image is Cederblad 51, located about 1300 light years away. This nebula is 3 arc-minutes in diameter, which corresponds to a width of just over 1 light year. The nebula is surrounded by the large dark nebula which is designated as Barnard 30.

In the full resolution view, between Cederblad 51 and the top of the image, many tiny red Herbig-Haro objects can be seen.
