Description

IC 477 is a reflection nebula located in the constellation of Canis Major, approximately 1,300 light-years away from Earth. Reflection nebulae are clouds of dust and gas that reflect the light of nearby stars, causing them to appear as luminous patches in the sky.IC 477 is believed to be illuminated by the bright star Epsilon Canis Majoris, also known as Adhara. This massive, blue-white star is one of the brightest in the sky and emits intense ultraviolet radiation, which ionizes the gas surrounding it and causes it to glow. The nebula appears as a faint, bluish cloud against the backdrop of the Milky Way. It is elongated in shape, with a diameter of about 8 arc minutes. IC 477 is located near another prominent reflection nebula known as NGC 2359, which is sometimes called the "Thor's Helmet" nebula due to its distinctive shape.Overall, IC 477 is a beautiful example of a reflection nebula, and its delicate colors and intricate structure make it a favorite among astronomers and stargazers alike.
