Description

M3 / NGC5272 – GC in Canes Venatici (CVn)

Another challenge from my little balcony, between mountains and trees. I can only see and capture objects between >20° and <60° above the south horizon, with mountains (and significant city lights) below and neighbor's balcony bottom above.

It was also too sad I couldn't focus on Arcturus (α Boo) well, not even with a Bahtinov mask. The old, very noisy Canon EOS 7D (first version) was no help at all, and I couldn't rate the focus in the camera's optical view finder. So I realized only after almost 50 minutes, when I downloaded images from my RasPi 4 (with Astroberry) and first time viewed them full screen, that all images were out of focus.

I needed another couple of minutes to re-focus and was only able to take another 8 shots, 60s each, before passing the meridian swing, which I always want to avoid with my setup and location – trees just right of it would be reached after ~10 minutes of time.

So, as this is only the second GC I tried, I heavily cropped and processed to achieve what is shown here. The highest magnification I can get with my DSLR setup is very limited by the maximum of 420mm focal length and of course no ocular projection.

Conclusion: Everyone has to face his own challenges ...
