Description

Telescope Live data

NGC 2080 is also known as the **Ghost Head Nebula**¹²³. It is a **star-forming region and emission nebula** in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way¹². It is located in the southern constellation Dorado, about 30 arcminutes south of the famous Tarantula Nebula (30 Doradus)¹³.

NGC 2080 was discovered by **John Herschel** in 1834¹. It has a diameter of about **50 light years** and contains several young stars and clusters¹². It is named for its resemblance to a ghost's head, with two bright patches called the \"eyes of the ghost\"¹². The western patch, A1, has a bubble created by a massive star, while the eastern patch, A2, has a cluster of stars still embedded in dust¹².

NGC 2080 is part of a larger complex of star formation and gas clouds called N160, which spans about 200 light years and contains several other nebulae and clusters¹³. NGC 2080 is one of the most active regions of star formation in the Large Magellanic Cloud¹.
