Description

My first finished project with my new mount, the Explore Scientific Exos-2 PMC.

Altought she's not perfect (I've been trying to tweak it for the past few days to remove as much backlash as i can) it's still a big step up from the Skyguider Pro. And i can finally use a Go-To system for target acquisition instead of pointing it myself, which makes a huge difference in the time a take to get the setup running.

This is probably the last project I will do with my 178M. Despite it being a great introduction to monochrome imaging, the dark noise and amp glow due to temperature is a real pain to handle in processing, and it is almost impossible to make suitable darks because of the changes in temperature during the night. I did try to build a DIY cooling system for this camera using peltier elements and i succefully achieve a difference of 12°C. But the thermal stability is still a big problem and it sometimes creates condensation on the filters. I did use it fot this project tough.

About this image, it was for a friend who needed a space picture for an album he's making.

I spent a first night doing only Ha and then a second one for RGB that i only used in the stars. Looking closely the amp glow I was talking about is still visible, but I'm happy with what i managed to have considering the original data I had.

I've just order my first cooled astro camera, the QHY294M, along with a motorised filter wheel.

I can't wait to try them. I've spent so much time struggling with the processing of bad data and so many nights waking up every 2-3 hours to change the filter. My hopes are to make quality images much more frequently and to reduce drastically the time I spend outside once the setup is runnig. We'll see.

Clear skies to everyone.
