Description

NGC 1055 is a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation of Cetus. It is 45 million light years away from earth, its diameter is roughly the same as that of the Milky Way, probably a little larger. The otherwise typical spiral arms are not visible in NGC 1055, as this galaxy is only visible from the side. The two colorful spiky stars near NGC 1055 do not belong to this galaxy, they are only 600 ly away and belong to our Milky Way.

M 77 is a bright spiral galaxy with a very hot active core. The age of M 77 is estimated to be 13 billion years, there are 300 billion stars in this galaxy. It's about as far from us as NGC 1055.Although both galaxies are far apart, there is a gravitational interaction between M 77 and NGC 1055.

Both M 77 and NGC 1055 are located near the celestial equator, their height is a maximum of 38° from my home, not favorable conditions for photography.
In the upper area on the left the galaxy NGC 1072 can still be seen very small, also a barred galaxy with a remarkable distance of 360 million light years.
