Description

Moon Edge (98.4%) - Full (9panels @2030mm) and 'From pole to pole' (21 panels @4060mm)

The last couple of nights we had some clear nights, with a full moon. Not ideal for DSO capturing. My new C8 scope is currently set up for lunar imaging anyway, so I’m continuing with that target practice with the RedCat and the C8 scope (see previous posts)
It’s becoming a bit of a standard routine, imaging the moon with the C8 and producing a full moon mosaic at native focal length. But I also try to get more detail in by making a mosaic of the ‘edge/terminator’ with the 2x Barlow. At the same night I made my mineral moon, I tried exactly that.

9 panels at native focal length to produce the ‘full moon’, which already took me about 1 hour to image. But capturing the panels with a Barlow 2x took even a bit longer. I had tried the terminator before ay 71.7%, but ended up in the cherry-tree with the last panels, with degrading image quality across the lower panels

As the moon was still nearly full, following the edge at this focal length, it meant I needed to capture 21 panels, a long haul but luckily all of good quality. Processing all this together does take a bit of time as well …

… but the end-result is quite mesmerising: The full moon edge at 98.4%

I’m posting both images together, so that people can compare detail, resolution and quality …

Note: I had to scale down the images to be able to upload them. The full moon ended up at 600Mb, the moon edge at 2.3Gb … all brought down to around 150Mb each (full moon scaled resolution down to 50% 5kx5k, moon edge to 30% 5kx5k)

C8 EHD, ASI174MM, IR685, EQ6-R Pro
Full moon - Native focal length (2030mm): 9 panels
Moon edge - Barlow 2x (4060mm): 21 panels

Any constructive guidance is welcome .. always looking how I can still improve on this

Clear Skies everybody! 🤩✨🔭
