Description

This Messier open cluster is located 2900 light years away in the constellation of Cancer at a declination of +12 degrees.  It spans about 25 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 20 light years.

This is the oldest open cluster in the Messier catalog. Typically, open clusters are younger and their stars tend to disperse over time, usually before they reach this age. This cluster still has about 100 larger stars similar to our Sun, and over 500 stars in total. Note the contrast between the hotter (bluish) and cooler (reddish) stars of the cluster. The cluster is roughly the same apparent size as the full Moon and is located fairly close to earth.

This cluster is nicknamed the King Cobra Cluster.  I don't really see that in this cluster.  There is a pair of bluish bright stars at 5 o'clock, so perhaps that is the Cobra head, but I don't have enough imagination to see a snake here.
