Description

This spiral galaxy is located 45 million light years away in the constellation of Ursa Major at a declination of +47 degrees.  It is a magnitude 10.2 galaxy which spans 5 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 70,000 light years.  From our view perspective, the disk is inclined about halfway between face-on and edge-on.

This is an odd asymmetric disk structure.  Several arms emanate form an inner ring, but how many arms are there?  The arms are ragged, with hints of VV rows. Blue star clouds and Ha regions are sprinkled throughout the disk.  The dark brown dust lanes stand out well from the disk.  I see a small bar with a possible nuclear ring near the core.  The core is offset significantly from the geometric center of the disk.

All of the above points to interaction with a possible companion, although I don’t see any obvious candidates.
