Description

Chaotic filaments of shocked, glowing gas 2,400 light-years distant break across the constellation of Cygnus in Pickering's Triangle. The remnants of the violent death of a star 20 times the size of our sun, these ripples of interstellar shock waves are seen edge-on.

Named for Professor Edward Charles Pickering, director of the Harvard College Observatory, the Triangle was actually discovered by his former maid and founding member of the Harvard Computers Williamina Fleming.
