Description

M105 in Leo was discovered by Pierre Mechain in 1781, but was not included in Messier's original catalog.  After a letter from Mechain describing it was found by Helen Hogg in 1947, it was added to the "modern" Messier list.  M105 is part of a nice grouping of three galaxies in an area about 20' across.  In this image M105 is the large elliptical at the bottom, NGC 3384 is the elongated elliptical above and to the right, with the spiral NGC 3389 to the left.  M105 and NGC 3384 are both members of the Leo Group at 32 and 35 million light years away, respectively, while NGC 3389 is further away at 63 million light years.
